The History of The Boat Locker
The Boat Locker was founded in 1657 by George Washington’s cousin, Jimbo Washington. While the general focus was on the square rigged tall ships of the day, Jimbo set up his cousin George with the row boats used in the famous crossing of the Delaware river. After years of wooden shipbuilding, Jimbo’s company pioneered the transition to ironclad ships during the civil war. While his ships were not the most popular of Union ships, the real contribution was the tunnels underneath the site of our storage building, used to ferry escaped slaves north to freedom. After the war, the last ironclad in production was left in storage until almost the time of World War Two. Today, we continue the passion for boats, exuding excellence in everything we do. We pride ourselves on our staff. They always strive to create an enviornment of knowledge and fun. Our goal is to make your experience on the water the BEST. During the early days of the 20th century, The Boat Locker pioneered sailing on Long Island Sound. To facilitate storage of the boats, Jimbo’s great-grandson Quonset came up with a novel idea for building design using the metal left on the old ironclad in storage. The revolutionary design was used throughout World War Two and many of those strong buildings are still standing, including the original, here on our site.
